Phones that scream when stolen
« on: October 03, 2006, 04:13:20 PM »
A new system which makes mobile phones let out a high-pitched scream when they are stolen is going on the market in the UK.

Makers believe that the system, which is also designed to also wipe data and deactivate handsets, could stamp out mobile phone theft in just two years.

The Remote XT system uses in-built software to link customers' mobile phones directly to a secure remote server which stores all their data from other phone numbers to text messages and e-mails.

If the owner is mugged or realises that their phone has been taken they can dial a 24-hour call centre and have it registered as stolen. Tracking the phone's location using masts, the system immediately activates an alarm like a high-pitched scream which can only be stopped by removing the battery.

The system also disables the handset itself so that it cannot be used even if the thief removes the internal SIM card. All existing data is also wiped off the phone but, because the information has been stored centrally, it can be restored as soon as the victim gets a new phone, designers said.

The technology also provides back-up for domestic disasters such as mobiles squashed on the driveway.

Costing 9.99 a month, the system can be used on any network and even works abroad. Mark Whiteman, managing director of Remote XT, said: "By making mobiles unusable to anyone but the rightful owner, the phones become worthless and we'll see (the) market for stolen handsets stamped out once and for all.

"Theft-proof phones spell disaster for the huge criminal industry that has profited from mobile theft for too long."

The makers believe that with mobiles now capable of storing information such as bank and credit card details, it could become increasingly attractive.
